Mossley came out on top in a typically hard fought and absorbing FA Cup tie over League rivals Witton Albion at Seel Park on Saturday.

Mossley boss Shaun Higgins made six changes from the side that had sadly capitulated at Clitheroe a few days earlier.

Photo – Smiffy Sixtamesides.co.uk

Andy Watson returned after missing Tuesday’s debacle through work commitments and Danny Egan was recalled to the starting line up on the right. They was joined by Connor Hampson, Kris King, Michael Oates and Lee Blackshaw all making their first starts. Matty Kay, Mike Fish, Jordan Goodeve, Steve Settle and Osebi Abadaki all finding themselves warming the bench.

The Lilywhites, looking to put their poor start to the League campaign behind them, took the proverbial ‘bull by the horns’ in the early stages of this game without creating any clear-cut chances. Several attempts from distance failed to trouble visitors keeper Matt Cooper, that apart from a volley at the far post by Lee Blackshaw from Danny Egan’s right wing cross that the Witton stopper saved well.

Mossley finally made a deserved breakthrough in the 37th minute. Mike Oates broke down the right and found Chris Rowney who in turn played Connor Hampson in on the left. Hampson, making his full Mossley debut, saw his initial effort blocked by Cooper only for the ball to return to his feet.. The teenage midfielder then steadied himself before calmly beating Cooper and a despairing defender at the near post from the edge of the six yard box. Thereon Mossley continued to have the upper hand through to half time with Witton failing to trouble Peter Collinge’s goal.

Witton changed their shape after the break and started, for the first time in the match, to cause the home defence any real problems. Kinsey headed wide from a great position and a powerful Carl Frost shot brought a good save out of Collinge.

Mossley, who were by now playing on the break with the visitors pressing desperately for an equaliser, should have extended their lead when a great run by Chris Rowney saw his pass accross to an unmarked Matty Kay intercepted at the last moment. It was though, Witton who continued to force the issue, this despite having been reduced to ten men when Parkinson limped from the pitch sometime after Witton had already used their allocated three substitutions.

Mossley finally sealed victory in the dying seconds. Another break by Rowney saw the home defence outnumbered. The assistant referee raised his flag for off-side as Matty Kay looked to take the ball from him. However, Kay didn’t intercept and Rowney continued his run into the box, only to lay the ball off to the now onside Matty Kay for a simple tap in. After consultation with said liner, the referee awarded the goal and Mossley’s safe passage to the next round, an away tie at the winners of the Glossop v St Helens Town replay, was finally assured.

This was a much improved performance by the Lilywhites and certainly something to now build on. The feeling was pervasive that Mossley had now fully gotten over the dismay of their previous game at Clitheroe.

Many members of Saddleworth Round Table have been “doing their bit “for at least 50 years. 50 years is about my age, hard for me to say but true I’m afraid. Five decades so hence the five challenges. Two triathlons, the national 3 peaks 24hour challenge, a parachute jump and to finish me off a marathon. “Why these events I hear you ask.

Triathlon is a tough often gruelling, kit heavy sport that demands lots of your personal and family time to prepare for. I often treated this strange breed of athlete in the clinic, and to be quite frank I used to think they were perhaps a few slates short of a full roof. I’d never done anything like this before, I’m not the best swimmer and the bike made my derrière quite sore, so what was the appeal? John Wooden said “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do”. So it began. I didn’t really understand the amount of time it would take up or the pain it would cause. “Practitioner heal thyself”, there was never a truer word spoken.

I completed the 1st challenge triathlon on the 13th of June and survived to tell this tale. The big one is in our capital city London, Hyde Park on the 25th of July. Cameras at the ready, I don’t think our current world triathlete champion, Allister Brownlie, has much to worry about.

So with that completed it was onward and upward literally. The national three peaks challenge is not unique, even the 24 hour challenge is done quite frequently, but the rewards of getting through as a team is what I think will make this special.

We have a team of 8, myself and my son Ben, Mike Coulter, current round table chairman, Dave Cooper, past chairman and president, Phil Wiggett , esteemed long term member of table and Nick Farrow and his friend Paul Syrymgeour. Last, but not least Dave MacDougal our back up driver, emergency Labrador and cook.

Dave has been given the role of head navigator, and charge of food preparation due to his in depth knowledge of nutrition, and his uncanny sense of smell for a watering hole. Vital traits, in challenge such as this.

The parachute jump will be done in the Lake District, on the 28th of August. A place soaked with beauty, charm and a few big hills. So to free fall at 13.500 feet above this green and pleasant land, I can’t think of a better way to take it in.

The final challenge is the marathon in October, to finally finish a truly unique journey. The journey has allowed me to reflect on many things and make me realise how lucky I am to be able to rise to these challenges and raise money for 2 very worthy charities and make a difference.

Saddleworth Museum Uppermill

Sadddleworth Museum at Uppermill in Saddleworth was established in the year 1962, and it is an outbuilding belonging to the 19th century Victoria Mill. Standing in a beautiful and historic location alongside Huddersfield Narrow Canal, it tells tales of the region’s past.

It provides historic information of Saddleworth, which comprise of villages like Delph, Diggle, Denshaw, Greenfield, Dobcross and Uppermill, where you can find the museum.

Saddleworth Museum unveils intriguing objects belonging to the past as it narrates the story related to the creation of Saddleworth’s character and landscape, as well as about the people who created it.

The Sadddleworth Museum provides clue to the prehistoric summer visitors and about their hunting spree on the hill tops. It also provides information on the soldiers who had shivered as while they were on duty at that of the Castleshaw Roman Fort.

Further the tales takes us to know about the farmers who, by weaving cloth had scraped a living, as we also come to know about the businessmen and merchants who were the architects in bringing prosperity to Victorian Saddleworth.

The Saddleworth Museum also provides more information on the women, men and children who had endured unending hours at the wooden mills, as also about the men who had tunneled their way through the Pennines, as to take railway and canal eastward.
